A Cascading Style Sheet for ncc.html

The following is an example of a Cascading Style Sheet for ncc.html pages within Daisy 2.02 books. This style sheet is designed to conform to U.S. ADA standards as well as suggestions for low vision design developed at University of Washington. This style sheet includes the following features:

Font Selection
In following the ADA suggestions the fonts are selected in the following order of preference:
Font sizes
The fonts decrease in size as the navigation levels decrease. However the smallest size is never less than the recommended 16pt.
Indentation
As a further aid to understanding the daisy structure the levels indent. This indentation is at the rate 3mm for each level, so that <h1> has no indentation <h2> is indented 3mm <h3> is indented 6mm and so on.
Boldness of the text
As a with indentation the relative boldness of each level is decreased as the level decreases.
Margins of text
Following the recommendations from the University of Washington the text is indented 1cm on both the right and left margins.
Contrast
The University of Washington also suggests that the type be of a light colour on a dark background. It was found however that even very low vision users did not prefer pure white text on a black background. Further dyslexic found such extreme contrasts less readable. In this style sheet a dark gray background (#404a53) was selected. Ideally the end user could change this and other settings to their liking.
Spacing of <span> elements
In many case the page numbering elements commonly included in the <span> tags are too close together. This style sheet has spread them out by 5mm.

You can download the style sheet as a separate file.

This style sheet was developed as part of the DaisyMaker project at the Wyoming Medical Center. It is offered as an example only. Suggestions and comments can be sent to Greg Kearney at gkearney@gmail.com
